This suburb is no different than the rest of Cairns. It is just as run down as the others. The neighbours are unfriendly. The water has a stench because Cairns Council rinses the bins every day at the beach and if you go into the water you'll come out smelling like a bin. There is nothing that stands out. Same streets, old looking houses, overpriced restaurants, undercover vans with speed cameras, small shopping strip and the nearest shopping centre (Smithfield) is like a ghost town. And just like the rest of Cairns it is just too hot. Nine months of the year in air con rooms or else your eyesight will deteriorate and you'll get skin damage/cancer. Most people here are just old and so there is a lot of employment in medical welfare and the elderly paid by the government. Another common job is a teacher. It is almost this place is buzzing with kids of all sorts of ages. Maybe because there is nothing else to do. Plus Carins Council is more or less a police council just issuing fines and warnings. In the dry season, the place is completely dry (which is 9 months of the year). When Christmas comes, then the rain comes with it. But it will come in a two week burst then it will stop. It is not a tropical place as most days it reaches 37 degrees. The weather bureau lies about the real temperature to encourage people to live here. Trust me I was fooled by all the lies and deception. If you plan to buy a house, they are all flawed. Expect to pay through the roof for renovation and repairs. And if you think you'll save money by doing it yourself, you are wrong again. Materials here cost almost double. Finally when you want to sell the darn property you will only get back what you put into it or even a loss. Warning to all people who want to move to Cairns - dont do it. I lost lots of money buying into Cairns. Everywhere else the property market has boomed. Here it's dead and it will stay dead for a long time.
