Many of my friends have purchased their first home in Homebush West area it is quite a good place for living, as mentioned by others there are quite a few shops nearby the neighborhood, and the major population are from Asia so quite a safe place to raise child.
The only issue I can think will be the environment, it is not so clean and tidy on the street, but overall a nice place to recommend.

A developed place in inner west, close to Strathfield and Rhodes, plenty Asian shops around and Paddy's market near the station.

Public transport is close to shopping and child care, primary school, golf club, GP everything you can find overthere.
