Panania

"small town that noone wants to call home"

Left my car on the street once, was vandalized, with door locks smashed. Local mechanic packed up shop after constant vandalism to his business, equipment, and even vehicles. Have seen people place explosive devices inside of people mailboxes. Neighbours were bashed up walking home. Noone walks at night unless they have to. Neighbours have suffered broken windows, etc, they dont even bother with filing police reports, even the police will tell you its a waste of time. Almost had my motorbike stolen.
Crime reports for panania show crime has gone DOWN, in reality, after living there for nearly 10 years, and knowing the neighbours, the crime has not gone down. We have all just gotten used to it and dont even bother reporting it.
I probly should point out, im living on the bad side of panania... not the side with the IGA (where franklins used to be).

Great for

  • Only place I can afford to rent
  • Easy to catch a train to the city.
  • Sometimes on a clear night, you can almost see hope in the sky

Not great for

  • Constant vandelism to property
  • Shitty footpaths
  • Place is bascally a race track for morons at night. Take sleeping pills if the sound of burnouts keeps you up at night.

Hi Henry, I we live close to Freda Street in borders of Panania and Picnic Point and our family are loving it. we dont have any problem. loved the neighbourhood they are just too friendly. whatsoever so far except some night are very noise with "monkey" kinda sounds. But it only happens every now and then.. 3 times so far in 4 months.
I heard the Panania Hotel side is the bad side of the are but I dont have problem so far walking around that area in the day time. So I cant comment much in this.

We're near Picnic Point (South side of Panania) and I have heard of some cars being vandalized, but our car has been out on the street for a good 8 years and has never been touched. It's pretty quiet at night - and there are a lot of convenient shops and station just a 10 min walk away. Is convenient to all areas, city is like 30 mins by train, airport 20 mins by car, the beaches are about 30-40 min drive and also a trip to the mountains is about a 45 min drive - so is in the middle of everything - and yet you can park at the local shops without too much hassle - as it's not yet an over-crowded area... not sure for how long though. I recommend it for families - I feel safe living here.

Panania has been the best move for my family moving from the Eastern Suburbs. Panania is quiet and is one of the very few suburbs in Sydney that does not have traffic lights . There is also no high rise apartments that litter most suburbs which makes a huge difference for parking and traffic congestion. One of the added bonuses is you can be at the airport with in 15minutes and at Central in 30minutes via the efficient train system. The area is packed with schools and I'm with in walking distance to 4 public schools and 1 Catholic primary school. I'm regards to crime I'm up at 0430 most mornings walking the dogs and I've never seen any issues with crime or youth hanging round causing problems.
I personally think Panania is a hidden gem and highly recommend it for any young family .
