Newlands Arm

"A small but growing town on the shores of Newlands Backwater, opposite Paynesville"

A lovely quiet and safe town, without shops as yet but within easy drive to Bairnsdale or Paynesville. Most houses have some views of the lakes and all are within easy walking distance. Newlands Backwater is the best area of the lakes for water skiing and has a safe swimming beach, double boat ramp and covered play & barbeque area (these can be a bit busy at times during summer). As all power is underground, there are no overhead wires for yachties to contend with and the town is well serviced with jetty berths and swing moorings. The people are friendly and it's a real country area. Our community hall has indoor bowls and a darts night and other organized community functions. We also have a residents association which has often gone to bat with local and state governments on behalf of residents. We have lived here for 16 years and love the place.

Great for

  • Good sized blocks of land (no postage stamp size blocks here)
  • No through traffic, so safe for children
  • Has a modern community hall and fire station and good medical and hospital services in Bairnsdale and Paynesville

Not great for

  • Some people may consider it a bit lacking in some immediate services

Who lives here?

  • Families with kids
  • Retirees
  • Country Lovers
  • Beach Lovers

Thanks CareyJ for providing such an obviously unbiased, balanced and fairly representative report. You may be interested to note that since your desperate departure the atmosphere around the town has significantly improved. It is hoped that you are genuinely happy in Melbourne and that you continue seeing your glass as now being half full.

No Offence but the joint is full of trolls and no lifers. Rented for 6 months to check out the area. Paynesville is no better, both areas infested with old troll with nothing to do. The ramp area is a ghost town and during summer it is full of out of towners. No Shops, eerie over winter, do yourself a favor and look eleswhere, the place is stuffed.
