Ashfield

"Small Friendly Riverside Community"

Ashfield is located in a handy area close to the city and roads north/south/east/west and the train line with Perth airport located on the other side of the river. This suburb is popular area for Kayakers to live close to the Swan River.

It's an older suburb established in the mid 1900's - many of the older homes have either been renovated or replaced by modern homes.

Recreation is fantastic with playing fields on the corner of Colstoun Rd and Guildford Rd used for Soccer, Dog training, Fire Brigade sports and other outdoor events. This site is used for fireworks on Australia Day - it's more impressive than the city display as you can sit close to all the action!

The community is bounded by the Swan River which offers areas for walking, swimming, Kayaking (Australia's largest kayak club -Ascot Kayak Club is immediatly opposite!), cycling, boating and is popular for fishing. Dolphins are regularly seen passing by.

I've lived in the area for 16 years and seen it transform from a dingy Homewest area to a renewed vibrant community, 2 key reason for the change were the closing of the Ashfield pub and the reduction in Homeswest housing.

It comes under the Shire of Bassendean who seem to be good to deal with, they promote a lot of free community activites including out door movies, bands on the river, youth events, fire works and more.

Like any community it has some bad element however I've can't think of any other place in Perth I can live so close to the river in such a great community with affordable homes...
