St Marys

"Small Town - Where everybody knows your business - not very LGBTI friendly"

A small town nestled under St Patricks Head.
Once a thriving village that has seen a rapid decline over the years.
Not much really happens in the town except for a few community groups who try to put some spark into the village.
People are generally ok but are quite homophobic and they don't mind saying so...the vocal minority.
A great place for retirees, families but would not recommend for the LGBTI community or singles.

Great for

  • If you live out of town its great.
  • No Traffic lights, parking meters.

Not great for

  • Not Gay & Lesbian Friendly
  • Can get a bit too cold in winter for some people
  • Shops close at midday Saturday and don't re-open until Monday, that includes the Service Station

Who lives here?

  • Families with kids
  • Retirees

not sure how old this comment is, but as a 12 year resident of St Marys I can honestly say I feel it is becoming the Gay capital of Tasmania !! Such an accepting, great and diverse community, the supermarkets are open 7 days/week, essential services such as medical, etc. Lots of new people moving to town, including gays, retirees, etc. Close to the coast, less than 90 mins to Launceston airport. The region has lots to offer.
Patience - come back for a visit - you may be pleasantly surprised!!

totally agree with you, St Mary's is in general very LGBTI friendly and this is backed up the number of gay couples who have made the area their home. Sure, you get the odd homophobe but hey, plenty of those in any town or mainland city and I don't think a St Mary's homophobe is particularly nasty, the predominantly tolerant locals just wouldn't put up with it!
St. Mary's is going through a little resurgence of late in culture and shopping, with many of the recent settlers who have discovered this little piece of paradise realising that they need to give tourists and visitors a reason to stop in 'the gateway to the East Coast'.
My wife and I bought a B&B here on a whim on the day we visited and made the move from Melbourne, such was the magic of the place and the friendly and welcoming community spirit of the locals (whatever your gender or orientation).
We've never looked back...

I generally agree with this review. Expect small town small-mindedness with a hefty amount of acerbic rumour mongering. Property prices are cheap in St Marys for good reason.

That opinion regarding St Marys is so out of date...must have been written eons ago. Two supermarkets open 7 days a week....very gay friendly! A great gym... top meals at the pub, 5 coffee outlets and card operated fuel open 24/7......about time you up dated your comments Homely.

Willowm2 a sad post.
