"Fairmount Rd Hawthorn East"
Although radically changed over the last thirty years probably for the worse. Was renowned for it's multitude of original 1920's Red brick Californian bungalows of 1920-22. Regretably a number demolished to make way for some pretentious 2 storey mansions which are too large for the street. Some have had another storey added very well others not. Garden makeovers have been both poor and good with unsympathetic fencing.
However the street was cut through in 1921 on the Stonyhurst Estate. Originally a 2 storey mansion stood on the current site of 5 and 5A demolished in 1940. opposite stands Fairmount House originally Auburn Villa
Owned in my day by the Bills Thompson.'s.The street therefore has much historicity the huge plane trees dating from 1921 and must be retained at all cost. The street overall is a very desirable one.Miami st regretablly also is not faring too well under a rebuilding programme. Wiseman's "Athol" of 1873 still stands at number 6 but has been desiccated
By unauthentic work.It was originally an early colonial residence built for William Cleverdon onetime Mayor of Hawthorn. Concern should be given as to what may become of this once charming street if development is to proceed unchecked.there seems to have been little height control over buildings.
