Tarneit

"Lived near Tarneit my whole life.."

I've always lived in nearby Hoppers Crossing or Werribee, and never really liked Tarneit as I felt it was too new, too cramped and lacked soul. Sure, there are pockets of Tarneit like this, but as Tarneit grows older, the more soul it gains. It's perfect for families with so many parks, walking trails and bike paths. It's very affordable, so you can get a huge house for half the price on the other side of town, and save your money for other fun things in life.

We ended up buying across from the Werribee River, which is probably my favourite spot in the whole of Tarneit. It's very peaceful here and the neighbourhood is great!

I'm not one to buy into a suburb just for its name, so I'm proud to say I live in Tarneit because my family absolutely loves it. I've got friends who live in nice suburbs on the Eastside, and that's great, but for me the affordability to quality of life ratio in Tarneit hits the sweet spot.

Hoppers Crossing

"Affordable, more soul than the surrounding new suburbs"

I have lived in and around the area for 25+ years so this may be a bit biased. I moved to Sunshine for a couple of years but my heart belongs in Hoppers so I moved back here.

History:
From what I gathered, and this may be wrong, but the first estate was Woodville in the 70s. Then in the 80s came Bellbridge and Mossfiel estates. The 90s was the boom with Cambridge, the Grange, Kingston Gardens Estate, Derrimut Heath and Central Park late 90s.

It's a bit of a balancing act as if you want to be close to the station/freeway access you'll need to buy in one of the older areas of Hoppers unless you can score a property in Central Park which is really close to the station and one of the newest areas. Properties don't come up for sale too often there, and they're usually a bit overpriced for what they are. Otherwise most places in Hoppers would be around less than 10 minutes to the station anyway so no biggie.

The areas closer to the station (Woodville, Bellbridge and Mossfield) are relatively affordable but are being targeted by investors and first home buyers at the moment. The demographic would be a mix of old people who originally built there, first home buyers and renters. The other estates would predominantly be owner-occupiers but considering they're around 20 years old now most would have kids moving out and there'll be lots of empty nesters, maybe a few looking to downsize.

By the way this is all my opinion and I'm not into real estate or anything, I work in IT lol.

Demographic:
There's a large mix but predominantly families. Very multicultural too so I wouldn't say there is one dominant race in the area, maybe caucasian Aussie still, but most of the buyers for our recently were Indian or Middle Eastern. Lots of Indians have moved to Tarneit and as a flow on effect moved to Hoppers. There's a mosque on Hogans Rd and a couple of Islamic schools so quite a few Middle Eastern people are moving to the area.

I'm Asian so don't take me as a racist please, just trying to state facts. There have been a lot of Asians around Hoppers since the start, but still lots of caucasian people around. Also an increasing number of Africans for good measure.

It's a great area for growing families, I guarantee that. The result is a very lively area with young families always out and about at the shopping centre and community events so the suburb is far from dead. Since there are a lot of low/middle class families Hoppers doesn't have a snobby feel about it, but everyone is pretty friendly.

Culture:
Lots of stuff for oldies to do with RSLs and community events. There's even stuff to keep hipsters occupied with a few cool cafes popping up like Corinthians, Morris + Heath and at the Plaza, plus Uniqlo and H&M for shopping. Kids would love the area too as most places have a big backyard.

Traffic:
Hoppers is pretty far from the city when you measure distance in a straight line, but it's got great freeway access compared to lots of the new suburbs popping up out west. Takes me an average 40 minutes to get to work just over the bridge in the mornings.

Once Werribee East Pseudo-CBD gets underway traffic may change, but also means there will be heaps more jobs created 5 minutes away.

Schools:
I went to Heathdale Christian College from Prep to Year 12 and it's a really good school. No wonder it's rated so highly. My daughter will also be going there but it is very expensive, so not entirely convinced it's worth the tuition but we'll see. There are lots of other great private and public schools in the area.

Things to do:
Since the Werribee Plaza was upgraded and changed to Pacific Werribee property prices have increased like crazy. It's a great shopping centre with everything you need. I barely go to the city, Highpoint or Chadstone anymore as most things are at the Plaza or obviously online shopping has changed the game.

There's a lot of fitness options, countless gyms from 24 hour membership based ones or $5 casual entry places along Old Geelong Rd. 12 basketball courts over at Eagle Stadium and massive indoor and outdoor swimming pools at Aqua Pulse. Safe place to go for a run or walk along the main roads or on dedicated tracks, and lots of the parks have been upgraded recently with new equipment and a basketball ring (still an ongoing Wyndham project).

For the outdoors it's not a long drive to the You Yangs mountains, Werribee South beach, or even Altona and Williamstown beaches aren't that far. Geelong is also a good option and not a huge trek out to Torquay with killer beaches.

Safety:
Depends which area of Hoppers but overall I find it relatively safe. I grew up on the mean streets of Birdsville in Werribee (with a lot of commission housing) and even then I'd feel safe walking the streets at night. Not as many break-ins as new areas as Hoppers is built up and you have neighbours around.

We currently live at the end of a cul-de-sac and it's safe as balls.
