"sanctuary"
We have been holidaying at Gerroa for several years. We are addicted to Gerroa because of the natural environment and the proximity and distance to Sydney. It is close enough not to be too much of a burden to get there and far enough away to curb the crowds.
The beach offers varied groups of water sport fanatics endless opportunities while the wide and shallow river that flows to the ocean gives mums and dads a place to relax while they watch their little ones have endless fun. Fishermen can always be seen both on the beach and on the wonderful Black Head rock platform. I am not even going to mention what I love best because it's so great and nobody seems to know about it!
Anyone who has been there will know that we older folk are particularly attracted to the beach because it has a large flat and hard shelf making it easy for long walks. I guess the down side is that it is a bit of a hike from the road to the waters edge but well worth the effort once there.
While the closest village may be Gerringong, which does have a few shops for the ladies, people might not realise that you can get to Berry the back way which is a mere 10 minutes drive. Turn left at Crooked River Road and then right into Beach Road and you are there. Both of these roads are high speed road so it's very quick. Berry has a bit of something for everyone - some great homewares, clothes, art, toy shop and of course eateries. It is made for the tourist so enjoy. I am not sure if I am allowed to mention my particular love is Juniper Hearth and the Woodfired Sour Dough Bakery is impossible to resist.
