Erskineville

"A once great suburb now spoilt"

If you like proximity to the CBD, good transport hubs, a village atmosphere, then Erskineville is for you. If you DON'T like heavy traffic, crowds, and increasing over-development, then Erskineville is not for you. Once a solidly working class suburb, the narrow streets with terrace housing along both sides were just not built to embrace 21st Century living. Everyone has at least one car these days and parking is a nightmare at the best of times. During peak hours traffic along Erskineville Road is so heavy it is often at a standstill and pedestrians constantly dart between cars. Heart stopping stuff. To make matters worse, developers have taken hold and multi-storey apartment blocks are springing up on blocks that once held one or two small terraces. This only adds more cars and more people to the already heavy traffic in local streets.

When I first moved to the area 25 years ago it was a quiet, cute area where you knew everyone in the strip of shops and they knew you. It had a strong sense of "village" and community. Thankfully, it still has its village look along the main street, but for how much longer is anyone's guess. It does have a couple of good pubs, but they're pricey. Now its just too busy for me and I'm exploring all the options for my own escape to the country.

I agree such a shame that Erko has been spoilt by developers! Way too crowded, polluted and noisy for me now. We're getting away from it before our kids lungs are full of car exhaust fumes!

this situation applies to many areas, especial to the areas close to the city.
