"A hidden gem"
I love living in North Melbourne. Public transport is very good; every train that goes to the western/northern suburbs stops there so you don't have to wait for too long for the next train to run into the city. This is a luxury as I used to live further out and when you missed a train, it took forever for the next one to arrive so it was so inconvenient.
I can use a City Saver to go to work/city by train or tram which is so much cheaper than having to use the daily ticket. Being so close to the city you save a lot of travelling time as well.
There are really good bike tracks when I want to ride around and traffic condition is good all day. You can easily get around by car even during peak hours as you can maneuver aound the many small streets to get in or out. I'm very suprised it's so easy to get around compared to the outer suburbs which have bottlenecks everywhere; I'm very happy that I don't need to waste time stuck in traffic.
It is a very peaceful area; I love strolling to Victoria Market for fresh produce or going to the parks every now and then. I live very close to Errol St and it is a good place to hang out or get your errands done. It has all major bank branches, supermarkets, a very good library, post office, Comics Lounge and a lot of good cafe and restaurant to chill out. On a nice lazy day, I like to go to The French Quarter Patisserie for coffee and cake while reading a good book.
It is so close to Melbourne Uni and RMIT so if you want to study something it is so accessible. Some parts of North Melbourne are in the catchment for University High School, which is one of the best public high school in Melbourne (in my opinion anyway because I went there). Located across the road to Melbourne Uni, they offer a very good learning environment with excellent curriculum. We got to use a lot of facilities from Melbourne Uni and surrounding areas for our classes.
North Melbourne is best suited for singles, couples and retirees. For families with young children, schools here are very good, but it can be a bit hard for the kids not having the big backyard to run around after school. Thankfully there are good gardens/reserves around so it's not too bad.
