"Not the best, not the worst."
As a family living in Deniliquin for the past 3 years we have found it to be a welcome change from the rat race, however, there is no shortage of actual rats in the area. The towns pest problem (think mice, rats, locusts and other critters) is out of control! The streets are mostly clean but their is also another pest common in the town: the litter bug.
Rent is cheap but the price of living is not, expect electricity to outweigh the relief you felt when you saw your rent was going to be peanuts.
The people are generally nice enough, a tip of the hat and a good morning to you are the norm when out walking, unless of course you have any colour on your skin besides white, but you won't see many people walking anyway, as a 100 metre trip to the shops would have most residents in stitches.
The medical facilities are terrible, we have a local hospital but if you ever plan on going to the doctors for a check up you are out of luck, with no doctors what so ever taking on new patients and even those that will see you have will keep you waiting for a few weeks.
Employment is difficult to find, but not impossible if you're willing to look hard enough.
Eating out is terrible and if you have any sort of food intolerance or if you're vegetarian don't even bother trying, as far as Cafe's go the one with the most options and the prettiest grounds would be The Crossing.
The council are pretty hopeless, the old town hall is literally overhanging the street and due to topple any day now and despite most townsfolk knowing the council have been aware of this for a very long time they still deny it.
This town should be a rural paradise - it may be quiet and the shopping is only what you can expect of the rural area but it is pretty - it has the wonderful Edward river, the Warring Gardens, the Island Santuary, the air is fresh and clean but there is such little focus on these areas, there are very poor and very little walking paths and next to no bike tracks.
So an ideal town if you're not into big city shopping, dining out, specialty (or quality) food, walking and of course if you don't mind town gossip and a fair share of red neck neighbours, but if you're looking for somewhere a bit more productive, friendly, accepting and organised you'd best keep looking. Essentially you can be happy enough here, thats if the town survives and doesn't go ghost, its easy to find somewhere much worse, but its so easy to find somehwere better.

You are obviously from the City so there are a few things I need to correct. Every country town does have pest problems during plagues. Deniliquin is not the odd one out. However, this is caused by agriculture mainly from growing grain. This grain is used to produce food for people all over the country so unless you don't want to eat I suggest you place a few traps around the house for the one month out of 24 that there are a few mice around. (I have lived here for a lot longer than 3 years and have never seen a rat).
Litter is a problem that every city/town faces. I have lived in Sydney, Geelong and Deniliquin and let me tell you Sydney and Geelong were a lot worse when it came to litter.
In NSW electricity prices are regulated. So it doesn't matter what retau\iler you are with you pay the same in country as what you do in the city. I have no idea why you said that electricty prices are high.
Living in Deniliquin are Sri Lankans, Indians, Chinesee, Vietnamese and all kinds of people who have come from overseas. There are very few people who would go out of their way to hassle them. I find your comment "unless of course you have any colour on your skin besides white" very offensive and it sounds like you are the redneck.
It is true that there is a shortage of GP's in Deniliquin, but that does not mean that you can't get health care. Once in Geelong I had to go to emergency for a deep cut to my hand. I have to wait 2 hours. With myself and my family I haven't waited any more than 5 minutes at emergency in Deniliquin no matter what the severity. Sounds a lot better than the city. Currently under construction is a new central medical facility for travelling GP's. This will bring more doctors to the town so if you feel you cant wait 2 week for your non urgent check up you should be right when that is finished at the end of the year. All GP's in Deniliquin currently leave open emergency spots if you need to see them and I have always been able to get in if I really need to.
I am a software engineer/accountant and there are plenty of jobs. I could not find a job in the city because when I was looking after finishing Uni the constant reply I got was either "you don't have enough experience" or "you are too qualified and we are worried you would move on too quickly". First job I went for in Deniliquin I got.
There are plenty of places to eat out. If you are a vegetarian have ever bothered to ask the waiter if you could have a dish with no meat??? The RSL, Bowling Club, Rinaldi's, The Globe, and many other places all have vegetarian meals and can quite easliy remove the meat from something else on the menu if you ask. There are plenty of Cafe's too. The Dublin, Brontes, Cafe 285, OB's Cafe, North Bakery Joshes Bakehouse the list goes on. All do good food and good coffee. Just find your favourite.
The only thing I agree with you is that the council is pretty hopeless.
There are actually quite a number of walking tracks. I have never gone out of my way to find them but I can think of 5 just of the top of me head which all go along the river.
Yes we do have our fair share of rednecks. I would like to emphasise FAIR SHARE. Living in Sydney and Geelong I saw plenty of rednecks too. I would have to say that the ratio of rednecks in Deniliquin is probably about the same as anywhere else in the country. I'm sure the Australia day riots in Sydney a few years back were a perfectly legitamite interest group with a logic political point of view (ROFL). The only problem in Deniliquin is that you can't move to another suburb but I hardly ever come across any.
There is no way that Deniliquin will go Ghost. There is just too much to offer and we are a crucial part of the Australian food bowl.
I suggest you go and join on of the many clubs around the town like the Circket, Tennis, AFL, Rugby Union, Soccer, Basketball, Bowling, Croquet, Golf, Lions, Rotary, Car Collectors, Car racers or one of the many other clubs. You'll definately feel accepted meet some more people from the town. You'll be hapier and might actually have a more balanced view of this great Demi-City of the southern Riverina.
jeez i read this and if i didnt know Deni then i sure as hell wouldnt wanna go there from reading this.. :-( ..coming from the rat race which has EVERYTHING..to a laid back joint like Deni????>>> ya gunna expect these things...Deni is what it is..and thats the best part about the place.. its a simple kinda life style and the start of the outback...Deni use to be a place that was booming..but then by the end of the drought people had no other option but to go elsewhere as jobs where lost, so you could probably blame the drought for the way it is now...im not sure if Deni "can"get better from after its terrible time...but if more people would come back to the beautiful town that it is then we will have it up and running back to its best...the township itself is just so friendly and there IS enuff walking tracks... remeber - you came from the rat race, where they normally have em.. as for us country people?? we like it just the way it is...and what Deni has is enuff....the town is NOT racest because the town is all about mateship..so there all a good bunch..vegetarian??...red meat..we were MENT to eat it...Deni is COUNTRY threw and threw, and they love there meat...you wrote not the best, not the worst..but all i got from that was pretty much bad....learn to love Deni for what it is.. just a small COUNTRY town...with a lovely community that will stay in your heart forever.. whether you just come to visit or if you live there..xoxox kiss and a hug coz your a Deni local... always look on the bright side cityite,, ;-)
