Reviews of Watson, ACT
"Oasis in the Suburbs"
Even though Watson is only 5kms from the city, it is surrounded by an oasis of green. The Mt Majura Nature Reseve, Canberra Nature Park, Gungaderra Grasslands Nature Reserve and the Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve give ample opportunities for the family to enjoy spending time together in nature. Being so close to the city it also has all the shopping, entertainment and services anyone would need, all within easy reach.
Great for
- Parks and gardens
- Family friendly
Not great for
- Busy boundary road - Federal Hwy

Watson is wonderful for families and anyone who wants to live close to the city, but in a greener, quieter place. You can ride to the city or take light rail (although light rail isn't so close to the newer part of Watson, and sadly the government hasn't seen fit to put in footpaths along the Federal Highway where most people walk. It has great local shops (excellent cafe, good Filipino restaurant), a good primary school, a soon-to-be-built big playground (lots of smaller ones scattered throughout) and it is close to lots of nature reserve walking areas. Being on the Federal Highway, you have easy access to travel to the coast, Sydney, Gungahlin town centre, Fyshwick and the airport etc. The only downside is housing is expensive. Houses are $1.2m+, townhouses are probably high 800s, apartments start from around 550-600 (2+ bedrooms).
Thanks for the review. We are planning to move to Watson. How's the neighbourhood & would you rate Watson a safe suburb for a young family? Thanks in advance.
