Living in Abbotsford (Melbourne)

Hi, we have just rented a place at in Abbotsford, at the other end of Victoria street...near Victoria Garden mall. We are new to Melbourne and was wondering if it is safe to walk around the area at night? I have heard mixed reviews about Victoria street, although it looks ok during the day.
Also, are there any restaurants/cafes streets in walking distance? (other than the mall)
