You should try and find a place close to where you work. Even though not as big as Syd or Melb, you can still end up spending significant time in traffic in Adelaide.
If you like the beach, then check out the suburbs south-west of the city, specifically have a look at suburbes between Glenelg and Seacliff. If beachside is too expensive, you only have to go inland a little bit to get really good value (I live in Warradale which is about a kilometer from the beach -average house price ~$400K). Schools, shopping and transport is good in this area which is around 20 mins drive from the city.
