Brian grew up on the family dairy farm and after leaving school joined the pastoral agency firm of Goldsborough Mort. In 1965 Brian was called up for National Service and completed his service in Australia, spending the second year at Supply and Transport HQ at Petrie Terrace Brisbane as the POL clerk for Northern Command (Qld).
