Is it really that noisy?

Hi guys,

I have been looking at apartments, and Bay Street seems really noisy. I had a coffee there on the weekend, and there were a lot of noisy bikes going up and down.

Do you get used to the noise at all?

Hi AJ,

I live on Bay Street and it can get a bit noisy, but mainly because we live opposite a pub and Friday nights can be loud! Thankfully, they close at 1am but as you can imagine it takes a while for people to get taxis and clear out. Most other nights it's not too bad. It has been a hassle since the non-smoking laws came in July as people hang around outside as they have no other area to smoke. So, I wouldn't recommend getting a place near a pub :-)

Generally, the noise is just from cars driving past which you'd get on any main street and it doesn't bother us too much. There's talk about getting the speed limit reduce from 60 to 40k/h on Bay Street so that would help.

Thanks for the quick reply vicpow.

I'm still hunting around in Port Melbourne, and Bay Street does have some really nice places to rent. There is even a new development going up which looks quite nice.

I didn't think that banning smoking would have any negative effects on people :) But I guess it would create a bit more of a problem for people outside.

I hope they do reduce the speed limit!! Fingers crossed.

Good luck with the search AJ! There sure are some great new apartments in Port.
Yeah, I thought smoking banned in pubs would be good for our health :-) The noise can be a hassle but we're looking at getting double glazing so it'll reduce the noise from the pub and the traffic a bit. It's no huge drama though, we knew it's be a hassle when we bought there and the previous owner warned us.

The beach was great last weekend...not crowded like down at South Melbourne or St Kilda.

Thanks again Vicpow!
