Best area in Brisbane to relocate & buy at reasonable prices?

My young family and I (My partner and 6 year old son) are looking to relocate to Brisbane and buy in the next year or so from Hobart, Tasmania. We are looking for houses to buy in the $380 to $500 thousand price range in a decent area. I was looking at Forest Lake as it looked perfect for us with the lovely green streets and places walk but I also read it has a very high crime rate. Is this accurate?
We are not "uptight", "fussy" or "nosey" in any way but do not want to be in a area that we will be broken into or can't walk our down the street without feeling somewhat safe.
We are open to any areas within our price range and any input would be greatly appreciated :)
