Commute or City Living?

Landed a job in Spring Hill, and starting to look at where I can live in the area. Come from Central QLD so am a little intimated by the big city. I'm single with no kids so just looking for a small unit but generally prefer a more spread out suburb/area.

Been looking at rent in outer suburbs for around $350 but then I see the cost of commuting 5 days a week would be $50+ along with an added 2 hours+ a day. So it got me thinking would it just be better to get a unit in the city? Everything would be close by and can walk to all the local attractions.

Guess I'm just looking for opinions from people that have done both and which they prefer. I want to avoid driving in the city on a daily basis, would stress me out way too much.
