Vacating premises even though the house is going on sale? Is it legal or wrong?

Was in rooming accomodation, property was up for sale. However, we tenants were all asked to leave ( not given form R12) and not allowed to stay in the house even for inspections, as we were all on fixed term agreements, and then going on to periodic agreements. Is this a breach of the law? The landlord is from interstate ( NSW) and does not seem to think that the law has been broken. the bond amount was actually refunded?
Could this have been due to me the tenant seriously breaching the tenancy agreement and does told to leave the house as it is up for sale.

Thanks.
