Too many French style homes being built in Canterbury
I know we dont want a repeat of the 1980's where the style dated quickly but this might be overkill.
What do you think?

I agree and it really really sucks. When will deveoplers realis tha not everyone whants the same style house.
And the lack of eaves and other shade producing and heat reducing features don't suit our climate.
Isn't French provincial not meant to date? I thought that style was meant to be timeless.
It's not that it will date, it's just if an entire suburb copies each other in new home construction it all starts to look the same. I do love the french provincial stye though.
Hi jjftts,
Yeah there are A LOT of houses going up in Canterbury at the moment as I noticed over the weekend. Great location for families if you can afford it, very expensive suburb. BUT if there is a market for a large amount of French style homes, then I guess that's why there are so many going up.

I fell in love with French Provincial style when visiting France. The lovely houses usually down long drives with lovely established trees. Not like here as they take up the whole block of land and leave very little room for trees or anything else and as someone else said, no eaves for protection from Australian sun.
Problem is there's no originality in design anymore. I just returned from Europe, builders there didn't just build something sloppy to make a quick profit, their construction was a work of art that was to last for generations, as it has. Projects would take years, use a lot of natural stone etc.. Nowadays, every new house seems to look the same, just look at all the Porter Davis, Metricon, Simonds etc homes, different builders, different designers, everything still looks the same. Very boring and doesn't say much about our creativity at all.
Mainland Chinese have this weird taste to show off their wealth with French style mansions with Greek columns. They even do that in China in many places, including some rural areas where people do not have much opportunity to see the outside world.
The overwhelming numbers of French styles homes in some suburbs makes the neighbourhood really boring aesthetically.
They seem to be being built in Toorak and Malvern / Malvern East too. Very at odds with more traditional terrace type housing. There are good builders then there are cheaper imitations. I suppose that is where the classiness comes in...
