Reviews of Casino, NSW

"Your quintessential country town"

I’ve lived here for 5 years now. Casino is a great little country town, however it’s certainly expanding. It’s much busier these days.
There isn’t a lot for kids and teens to do without travelling to Lismore though.
There is always work around here though, from the meat works to aged care and disability work to farm work. The housing market has sky rocketed in the past year and it’s hard to find an affordable rental property and houses are being sold within days of hitting the market.
My kids attend St Marys Primary School and I think it’s an amazing school! The principal and teachers are wonderful!
Daycare is hard to get into if you have younger children. Get on a waiting list asap.
I have loved every minute living here.
We’ve also been voted the best tap water in Australia!

"Casino - A nice town not far from major centre's"

So my fiance and I relocated to Casino from Stanthorpe in southern Queensland in September last year and have enjoyed the experience so far, we managed to get a cheap place to rent opposite the local golf course on West Street (Kyogle Road) which leads to the meatworks....we are presently paying $170 per week for a 2X1 with a porch outside, views to the eastern hills and decent sized living space so we're pretty happy about that.

You'll find Casino quite a welcoming place, we have had no issues since moving here and there seems to be a good general sense of community spirit and involvement by families, there are plenty of shopping options available from the big two supermarkets and Aldi right down to corner shops which stock milk, bread and the other basics which you might need from time to time :)

Public transport: Unfortunately the question is nearly what is public transport in Casino as there really isn't much of it, there is a bus which goes to Lismore, and Kyogle a couple of times each day and the same is said around town but other than that it's non existent which is a real shame especially if you don't have a car and it's wet...although there are a few cabs in town which can be called on a local phone number to make things easy.

Parking on Walker St (the main drag) can be a nightmare anywhere from 9am onwards during the week and on Saturday mornings, hence most people tend to park in the Woolworth's or Aldi carpark's and just walk to wherever they need to go - there is no cost or parking rangers associated with this :)

There are of course bad streets in town but they are mostly around Baronia Crescent - towards the meat works as there is a huge amount of housing commission and general rabble up there, and living where we do you hear every light and siren that goes past which can make for some fun viewing if highway patrol pull people over outside my front door lol.

The only other issue we have, and I am sure others in town have this too on a regular basis, the smell that is coming from the meatworks - today is 18/05/2016 and is the first time in 2.5 days we have been able to have the place opened up during the day as during most days and nights the smells only have to be picked up by a slight gust of wind and its time to lock the house up....this is due to the smell of offal etc sticking around for sometime, although it's something that we have since gotten used to after moving here.

Overall Casino is a nice place to have friends and family over, we have had family here a few times since moving and they don't seem to mind it, if you want something specific you can always head to Lismore (20 mins) Tweed (90 mins) Grafton (70 mins) or as always there is the option of ordering what you want online and have it delivered to your doorstep....

Employment: As with most smaller towns in regional Australia employment is not the easiest thing to come by, it seems to be the age old case of keep knocking on doors and talking to people who might know people, I have just secured a work placement (I'm studying Certificate III Individual Support - Disability) simply through contacting one person who knew someone else.....and if you can't get work locally don't stress because there are plenty of options within a 2 hour radius (Tweed, Lismore, Ballina, Grafton and Coffs Harbour)

Overall Casino is quite a nice place which has all the basics covered and so long as you can settle into a quieter way of life than it's well worth the move.

Great for

  • Affordable rent
  • 20 minutes to Lismore if you need bigger items
  • Easy commute to Tweed, Grafton and Lismore for work
  • Mostly flat, great for walking or riding.

Not great for

  • Baronia Crescent and surrounds
  • Parking on Walker Street
  • Lack of public transport linkages to Lismore
  • Smells horrible some days because of meat works

"Casino- Known as the Beef Capital of NSW"

Situation in Northern NSW, Casino is on the Richmond river 32 kms inland from Lismore. The town is a major centre servicing the many smaller towns dotted around the area. Casino is well known for its beef and holds a Beef festival each may. There are great amenities in casino for the tourist and local alike. Shopping centres with major supermarkets, department and specialty stores. There are plenty of sporting facilities such as sporting fields for a large number of sports, a golf course, tennis courts and a swimming pool amongst other sporting venues. Admire the well cared for parks and gardens in and around the town. There are numerous places to eat an accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets.
