My suggestion is two part. First, check out Trulia and Zillow. They tend to give you a nice sense of what's available, and the general prices. Then I'd hit up Craigslist. After your initial research you'll have a better idea of what's a good deal, and what's SUCH a good deal that there's no way it's going to work.
