Just remembered another venue: the Petsmart in Cortlandt Town Center has scheduled adoption days for dogs and cats. There is a Greyhound Rescue organization which comes regularly. These retired racers are smart, gentle, affectionate, and make great companions, as they're so grateful for attention after their rough former lives.

There is an SPCA in Briarcliff Manor, which is close to Croton. (Note, it is not the same organization as the ASPCA.)
