Port admits to poisoning kids, birds

THE Esperance Port Authority has pleaded guilty to causing lead pollution in two incidents that led to children being poisoned and thousands of birds "falling out of the sky''.

Up to 9000 birds were estimated to have died in the southern West Australian port city in December 2006 and January 2007. The cause was narrowed down to lead poisoning in March 2008 after testing by the WA Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC).
