How bad is the crime rate and drugs in Footscray?

We are thinking of moving back to Melbourne and have a place in footscray, my concern is the drug and crimes rate there. I have two kids that i need to take sure they will be ok catching public transport.

Considering Footscray is largely young family populated, it is nowhere near as bad as other areas of Melbourne, like most cities around the world, if you go looking you will find it, if you are aware of it but have no interest, you shouldn't be bothered by it. Naturally common sense plays a major part.

Have lived in for Footscray 10 years and my daughter has done primary and high school locally all of an excellent standard. The "Footscray Drugs" thing bothers me. This reputation is undeserved. Yes we have druggies and crazys - they are probably more in your face here, whereas its a stigmatized person who secretly does drugs on the same level in politer suburbs which I don't like. Personally I don't want the local colour to change in Footscray - a vibrant and friendly down to earth community- realistically I believe to be civil those that are less fortunate have to be accommodated - but I also don't want my daughter hurt by this either so I guess I have double standards too.

The insinuation that working class suburbs (particularly in the west) such as Footscray, Sunshine and St Albans are ridden with drug takers or drug dealers is a pretty narrow view for an area with so much to offer. Schools in Braybrook and Maribyrnong are actually some of the highest achieving schools in the state, the cost of living is fairly low considering how close the city is and other trendy inner city suburbs, theres a few different options for tertiary education and lots of work and business opportunities, and this is all without mentioning entertainment and dining options all without even having to go far. Of course there's a few bad seeds, but they are not localised entirely in the western suburbs and I invite anyone who thinks so to check out some stuff we have to offer. You might actually like it! :)

As a proud, non-classist, non-racist, non-bigoted local, I want to say Footscray is awesome - full of lovely, interesting, exuberant, diverse, non-classist, non-racist and non-bigoted people. Except for the mugs who posted above - hopefully they'll move soon so we can keep the tolerant character of the area in tact!

lizc16 I, for one am glad that another non-classist, non-racist, non-bigoted person is also living in my lovely town. I'm also a non-classist, non-racist, non-bigoted person (herein known as "NCNRNBP") and would like to extend a warm welcome to other NCNRNBPs in other parts of Australia looking for a non-classist, non-racist and non-bigoted suburb to live in.

Here's to all the NCNRNBPs!

Well, well well....
This diatribe of nonsense by livg is typical of a racist, self-centered (normally white) aussie female and her attitude: "Us" (Aussie born & therefore more "status" than immigrants) and "them" (immigrant of any nationality/background/race/religion). Simply, Us and them.
This simplistic childlike interpretation of the World is typical of the working class (or should I say under class) here in Australia whose vision of Australia goes back 30-40 years because of their parents. - who probably still believe in the "Glory of White Australia" .
These bogans think Australia is the best country in the World especially before those "immigrants came" (lol ) and “spoiled it for the rest of "us" (many lols..)
Seems like this troublesome schitzophrenic human lived in the same apartment as a friend of mine did and I know exactly which one above the African store. I never had any issues walking about the streets and I was always greeted with smiled at that store. There are no "African gangs" lol - probably referring to the pool hall where several smiling friendly Somalis/Ethiopians congregate on weekends to play pool. The only time I saw any drug dealers on the street is on Saturday afternoon when they hang about hussling on Nicholson street. Normally, they mind their own business and try to make a buck. They don't seem to approach strangers. They have their own thing going. Just avoid them. If you don't like the look of someone, simply cross the street (happens everywhere), look the other way, or how about saying "Hi there"…but keep walking (lol)
It's funny how she refers to this "Asian man" pushing her at Coles. What does it matter if he was Asian? Why the focus on race? What if he was her own race? Sound to me like she annoyed someone and he pushed her. Sounds like she deserved it too. And then "punched in the mouth" by a "massive -racist_slur- woman”. Again it sounds like she deserves to be punched in the mouth. Probably made a racist comment out of impatience waiting like everyone else at the line in Coles.
The whole of Footscray should have a party that this woman has finally left the suburb… probably to annoy another group of people in another suburb, hopefully on the other side of the continent. We salute her departure and I'm sure she will not be missed. As a resident of Footscray myself, I'm sure I am representing the vast majority of residents here when I say to whoever wrote the above comment: " WELL EFF HER!!!!" too

Look... If you don't have balls of steel then leave. It's not a suburb for cowards. The less of you there are around here, the less ppl I have to dodge on the footpath to Coles.

Where are you getting your drug and crime "rate" figures from? The tabloid press? Asking "How bad" is like asking how long is a piece of string...it depends.
