What's around St John Street

House description

“"Quality Row"”

Built by James Bennell in 1843/44 and part of a line of residences that became locally known as "Quality Row" stands 165 St John Street. A four storey brick rendered home with a heritage listed façade. A grand entrance into the home features a formal living room spanning the width of the property and leads into a formal dining room. All floors are polished wood and in excellent condition and all rooms have original open fireplaces. There are mantle-pieces made from flame cedar and 12-pane double hung sash window giving the appearance of bay windows with folding panelled internal shutters which are set into the reveals. Going through to the back of the property you will find the main kitchen and family room with Euro laundry plus access to a beautiful courtyard and carport giving access from the back of St. Vincent's' hospital.
The basement features 2 rooms, a scullery and storage, the original kitchen below stairs was moved onto the main level in 1880 and the basement was closed. It was re-opened again in 1976 by the current owners who put a new damp course down, replastered the walls (on 1" battens) and laid a floating floor, these rooms are currently used as living and utility rooms. Up the first flight of stairs you are led to 2 very good size bedrooms, the rear bedroom has an en-suite and the front bedroom has magnificent windows with Georgian and Regency styling plus wardrobes either side of the fire place. The last flight of stairs brings you to the 2 attic rooms with sloping ceilings and dormer windows, ideal for extra guests or play rooms.
This home was owned by the Bennell family until it was first bought in 1853 by William Stammers Button who was the first Mayor of Launceston, the home is steeped in history with many interesting facts. We are marketing the home as "Expressions of interest" and inspection will be by appointment only. Please call us today to make your appointment.
