DESCRIPTION:
"Pacific House" is a two storey rendered residence erected in the Victorian manner, the ground floor being obscured by the entrance stairs and the front fence.
The roof is of a medium pitch, with the medium pitch extending unaltered over the front verandah. The roof is punctuated by three chimneys, one triple, one double and one single, all surmounted with tall glazed chimney pots.
The front verandah commands a fine view over King Edward Park and the Tasman Sea to the east.
The windows are timber framed double hung sash and the windows to the front facade are in two groups of three, to either side of the main entrance door, and are round headed and decorated with mouldings.
The front entrance door is original, stained and complete with its original furniture. The door is surmounted by an oblong fanlight, glazed in plan Bristol Blue, whilst the lights are glazed in Bristol Blue decorated with a swirling pattern of flowers and foliage.
"Pacific House" has two single storey wings, one to the south and one to the west, and an enclosed verandah to the north.
The interior features original four panelled internal doors, stained architraves and skirting boards, Wunderlich ceilings with pierced plaster decorative cornices and ceilings roses. The Morning Room retains its original white marble fireplace, complete with a round headed cast iron register grate.
The Drawing Room features a superbly carved marble fireplace designed in the French manner. This fireplace has an Art Nouveau register and tiles. The fireplace is surmounted by a large mirror which is original to the residence.
On the ground floor and to the south of the residence is a brick cellar with a barrel vaulted ceiling connected to two large dining and sitting rooms plus kitchen and bathrooms. A single rise staircase connects the ground floor with the first floor.
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE:
"Pacific House" possesses both historical and social significance being the residence of Thomas Smith, a well-known and respected identity in the Building Industry in Newcastle for nearly sixty years, and in that time a Builder, Contractor, Architect, Newcastle Council Alderman for fifteen years, Mayor in 1896, respected Arbitrator and at one time President of Builders' and Contractors' Association. Thomas Smith's most notable work is the Tooth's Cosmopolitan Hotel (Classified) in Carrington, erected in 1905, and is a charming example of the Federation Free Style.
"Pacific House" addresses its front facade to The Terrace and its rear to Bingle Street and was erected in the early 1870's adjacent to "Myrtle Villa".
There has only been two owners of "Pacific House", Thomas Smith and the current owner, and "Pacific House" is the only residence in The Terrace which was designed and erected by its original owner.
