Reviews of The Hill, NSW
"Newcastle’s most desirable suburb"
We moved from the constant noise of Honeysuckle and we’re never leaving The Hill!
Here’s why:
- The geographical centre of town
- Away from the noise of ship horns, helicopters and pubs (unlike honeysuckle)
- 10 min walk to three different beaches!
- 10 min walk to Darby St eat street
- 10 min walk to most restaurants
- 5 min walk to King Edward Park (& bogey hole)
- 10 min walk to Harris Farm
- Super quiet & peaceful with lots of greenery
- Beautiful heritage architecture

"Close to everything, yet away from the hustle and bustle"
We are renting and love it here so much, we are hoping to buy in this tightly-held suburb. The local school is meant to be excellent, so we want to be on this side of Darby Street to be in Zone when our child is school age. My husband wants to be able to walk through King Edward Park for a quick surf, and still be able to walk to work. We'd like to continue to be a 'one car family'. The area is just great, we love all the cafes and beauitful walks on our doorstep too.

"Smart move north"
As a Sydney-raised, but no longer a Sydney lover, our recent move to Newcastle has been nothing short of brilliant. We've been so warmly welcomed into the neighhbourhood, and are loving the ease of life here. We have a young child and have heard the local school is excellent, I have work in town, and can leave home at 8.45am and be home in time to have a few hours together with my family, and ehte occasional lunch at home with them as well. We are absolutely loving it! The beaches are quiet and clean and there are some excellent local shops. We think we have landed in the perfect neighbourhood.

"Happy Hill life"
Have only recently moved here, but we love it and are discovering new things every week, so much to explore on foot - it's interesting being in the older part of town, and we have discovered some magical spots. We've found it to be a really friendly neighbourhood and enjoy the variety of things to do in the area. Being 'foodies' it's a bonus being so close to so many excellent eateries, and we're looking forward to the warmer weather to make the most of the gorgeous beaches and ocean pools. Pleasantly surprised by the mall in town with so many arty shops and a great organic market - a lot more interesting than the mega-malls! and knowing it is yet to reach its potential makes it quite exciting to see what will unfold...
"Good living on The Hill"
It's got all the pros of Cooks Hill but far enough away from the pubs, so surprisingly quiet in the evenings. Still close enough to the beaches to catch a morning wave or swim before work. Darby Street cafes are a step away for weekend brunches or a casual dinner. There are some good local parks around for a bbq or lazy day with the (grand)kids. I agree with the other reviews about the car - leave it at home most days! Love it here too.
"Sea breeze in the heart of town"
Love being able to walk down the hill to work and not have to worry about a commute/parking. The family really enjoy coming to stay with us from Sydney, as we can all walk to restaurants, enjoy a few drinks and walk home again, and can walk to one of the uncrowded beaches. We enjoy our walks and often finish it with a swim at the baths before walking home again. It's a fantastic lifestyle, and we don't plan on moving from here now we've discovered it.
"Quiet, yet near it all."
It is a charming area with a lot to offer and discover. So many interesting walks, parks and areas of interest, and a stroll from pretty much anywhere you need. We are still getting through our list of restaurants in town, and haven't been disappointed thus far. The theatre, gallery and library are a bonus, and being beach lovers, we feel we have found somewhere we can finish raising our children and happily retire.

"The Hill has it all!"
A stone's throw from everything you could possibly need. Been here for two years now and wouldn't go anywhere else. Love the lifestyle, lots to do close by - save a lot of time not having to drive all over - not to mention petrol $. Hardly drive and even considering selling the car! Nice mix of people and very quiet considering it's still 'in town'...
