The answer there is things have changed with the ferry service has improved and it's alot better with so many services now
I lived there almost a decade ago but what I found difficult was having to rely on the ferry, as if you miss a ferry, it's often a while until the next one, plus it was 1 hour 46 minutes into the City in the morning for work, so an early start getting the 6.41am ferry to be in before 9am! Singles could find living on the island a bit limiting in terms of freedom of movement of an evening/night-time. Other than that, the mozzies, ticks, toads and snakes! Unprepared, I got bitten to pieces when I was first on the island, which was horrific and the bites were so itchy I almost got sepsis, I think I actually needed antiobiotics...! Apart from fly-screens, you'll need vegemite (mozzies hate the smell it causes to emanate off the skin), light clothes (dark and floral clothes attract them), and apparently tea-tree oil on pulse points is a helpful and natural repellant for people. Looking after the pets properly is extra-important....! Heartgard for heartworm prevention, as mozzies are so prevalent, and FORTNIGHTLY Advantix for (flea and) tick prevention, as ticks are a real threat. If you prefer natural prevention, for fleas and ticks, try Dr Ben's Paws and Claws Cedar Oil Spray but pets will definitely need Heartgard to prevent heartworm, due to the horrible mozzies. Perhaps a couple of zappers on the verandah, as well as planting Lavender and Citronella, would be helpful to keep them at bay. Plenty of horrible cane toads as well, so pets are probably best left indoors for the most part, if you have to leave them alone, or in a secure pet enclosure built off the house, as the toads can even jump into their water bowl which could poison them if they then drink it - let alone if they get hold of one! Snake fencing would be recommended around the bottom of garden fencing and dug one foot into the ground too, to help prevent the snakes from getting into the garden. If you can prevent and therefore cope with the horrible 'pests', and like getting up early, enjoy long trips on public transport and are of course punctual or at least willing to invest in a tinny, and if you are coupled, or a family, rather than a single, then there are no downsides lol! Oh, there is no sewerage on the island, so everyone has a septic tank which needs emptying every so often, supposedly not more than between every three to five years though. There is a vehicle ferry service to get car and tinny over, also belongings, off a ramp further along from the main jetty. It's a beautiful island with mostly lovely people. Hope that helps answer your question. :>
