Craigslist really is the best resource. If you don't mind paying a broker 10 percent of one year's rent, then I would contact the Citihabitats on Sullivan Street. If you can't pay a broker, then go to Craigslist and do rentals by owner or no-fee rentals. Your selection is going to be much more limited by trying to skirt around a broker fee; but, it is possible to find a place. The Archive and Printing House buildings on Greenwich both have leasing offices but the apartments are quite expensive (as is all of the rest of the West Village).

Word of mouth, asking around, keeping your eyes & ears open is still the best way... If you have more money then time, then Sotheby's has a good downtown office. They specialize in odd, quirky and interesting spaces, and they're much less pushy than Corcoran...
