I live in the West Village and it's my favorite neighborhood in New York. It's a little bit sleepier than, say, the East Village, but it's hard to beat how beautiful it is. It has the most green out of any neighborhood downtown, and there are a ton of fantastic bars and restaurants. It's also really pricey and that lends itself to the sleepy part -- the demographic is a bit older and wealthier than a number of neighborhoods downtown. It's historical, beautiful and you never run out of things to do within a block.
I'd agree. It's also very much a neighborhood. Friendly, open, warm. It feels like a village, hard to walk a block or two without running into someone. If you have kids or dogs or both you have license to talk to anybody. And anybody has license to talk to you. If you like the sound of this, you'd be happy here. If not, maybe not...
