How to makeover your bathroom on a budget

If your bathroom is looking old and tired yet your budget does not allow for a total overhaul, these clever tricks will not only revive and uplift your space but will also add charm and character.

Simple changes can make a big difference for what is generally the smallest room of the house and you’ll be surprised how altering a few things here and there can transform even the dreariest bathroom into an inviting haven and all without breaking the bank.

Update the tiles.

If your bathroom was renovated many years ago and is now dated, chances are your tiles will be looking ‘old fashioned’ and in need of a refresh. New tiles can dramatically alter the look and feel of your bathroom adding instant appeal and reinvigorate the space.

Tiles have come a long way in recent times and there are now many good quality and cost effective tiles available. Do your research online before you hit the showrooms so you have a good idea on what style and colours you’re drawn to and will suit your budget. Ensure you know all the details regarding sealing and cleaning about your chosen tile before you purchase so there are no nasty surprises later.

Bathroom floor areas are typically small spaces so you may be able to spend a bit more here and save on the wall tiles. The most cost effective wall tiles are normally subway tiles or standard rectangle tiles in white. These styles are highly effective and will create a light and bright canvas allowing other features in your bathroom to be highlighted. To save money, consider tiling walls that are absolutely necessary such as in shower areas and behind vanities. Other walls can be simply left alone or repainted to save costs.

New grout.

If budget simply does not allow for an overhaul of your existing tiles, replacing old and stained grout will make the world of difference. Over time grout can become grimy and discoloured from its original state giving your bathroom an unattractive and rundown feel. It’s very difficult to return grout to the brightness it once was by scrubbing and using cleaning products alone.

Replacing grout can be a DIY project you can tackle yourself over a weekend but be certain to purchase the right tools from a hardware store to ensure the job is done properly and efficiently. Keep in mind much patience will be required to remove the old grout in between all tiles on floors and walls before regrouting.

When reapplying new grout, use a darker colour on the floors so that future stains are not as noticeable. If your wall tiles are light in colour use a white grout to enhance and freshen the look of your existing tiles. Although more expensive, consider purchasing a stain resistant grout to minimise the maintenance required to maintain their cleanliness down the track. You’ll be surprised how your existing tiles will be brought back to life simply by re-grouting.

Replace bathroom fixtures and fittings.

Replacing bathroom fixtures is an inexpensive way to add instant style and a modern feel to your space. When choosing new hooks, towel rails and cabinet handles select a consistent design that is available in the same metal colour and finish. If budget permits consider also replacing tap ware in your shower and vanity with a more contemporary style to complete the look.

There are many styles available but don’t be tempted to choose an ultra contemporary design that may not suit your current bathroom style. New soap holders, dispensers and hand creams will further add aesthetic appeal to your bathroom. These simple changes will give your bathroom a fresh new look and feel.

Brighten up your space.

If your current bathroom lacks light and it looks a bit dark, dreary and uninviting, consider having new light pendants or lanterns installed to instantly uplift the space. Clever use of inexpensive lighting will not only alter the ambience but will also transform the look of your bathroom.

Choose a combination of decorative and practical lighting to create a pleasant light flow in your bathroom. The most effective and functional lighting for around vanities and shaving cabinets are sconces mounted at eye level. This type of lighting will provide an effective shadowless illumination offering sufficient and flattering light for when you’re getting ready for the day.

To dramatically revamp the look of your bathroom choose a decorative pendant light that doubles as a work of art in your space. These days there are many beautiful styles and designs available in a wide range of price points. Choose a pendant that will not only provide some wow factor but will also suit the design and style of your bathroom.

Add in some plants.

Adding plant life to your bathroom is a cheap and simple way to add a sense of well- being and freshness to your space. Not only do they provide a decorative appeal but they also improve the air quality inside your bathroom. Choose plants that thrive in humid bathroom conditions and low light.

There are some beautiful options available that will instantly update the look and feel of your bathroom with stunning floral and leaf arrangements.

Amongst the best bathroom plants are Sansevieria (also known as ‘mother-in-law’s tongue’), Spider Plant, Bamboo Dracaena and the impressive orchid varieties. Orchids are available in beautiful bold colours that will completely uplift the mood of your bathroom. Choose patterned pots in attractive colours to add further appeal to your new plants.
