Designing an Affordable Master Bedroom

When you’re ready to design your master bedroom, surrounding yourself with convenience and comfort will make the 1/3 of your life spent sleeping and relaxing more restful. Integrating lighting, a proper color scheme and furniture will help you in creating a functional, cohesive space that is still personal.

Assessing Your Needs

You’ll have an easier time in designing your own sanctuary if you first assess your wants and needs, so that all the elements of relaxation and rest will be achieved.

Your bedroom needs to be private, but if you share the place with someone special, be sure that there is plenty of room for you both to enjoy private moments.

You will want to set up the room for things other than sleeping. These include exercising, talking on your phone, watching TV or reading. Your lighting should be targeted for daily tasks like getting dressed, with enough lighting for easy reading in bed.

Design your closets so that you have plenty of room for clothing and anything else you want to store there. You may want extra seating for reading and relaxing, and perhaps a fireplace for those cold nights.

Select Appropriate Furnishings

You may want matching pieces of bedroom furniture, but you should also feel free to use pieces that are mismatched. This is a trend that gives you a chance to cater your room to your lifestyle. When you mix furniture, the pieces should still look proper together, and share common accents or finishes.

Allow for Separate Spaces

If you share your master bedroom, you may want to create some divided spaces for the style and needs of both people. Separate bathrooms may be quite helpful, or just separate tables and mirrors for getting ready for work. Closets for both people will be helpful, too.

 Having a
Having a “His” and “Hers” side can be a good way to keep the bedroom separate for two people.

Color Schemes

Your chosen colors will depend on the mood you would like to inspire. Cool colors give you a tranquil feeling. Warm colors offer more energy in the look of the room. If there is one specific element that you want emphasized, you might want to choose a more neutral color scheme, to complement the look.

Master Bedroom Style

The style you show in your master bedroom shouldn’t compete with that of the other rooms in your house. If your favorite style is different from that of your home’s theme, you can strike a balance that incorporates all the elements.

Lighting Is Important

Your master bedroom lighting will accent your room design. Warm, soft lighting will encourage you to relax, and mimic the light of the sun on cloudy days. Overhead lights are essential, but task lighting is also important. Bedside lamps work well if one partner wants to read, so the other can still sleep. There should also be appropriate lighting in sitting areas and walk-in closets. Dimmer switches are wonderful for those romantic nights.

Master Bedroom Purpose

The main purpose of your bedroom is to give you and your partner restful sleep. It does have other functions, however. Master suites are much different from nurseries for you and your baby.

As you design your master bedroom, keep the style and needs of you and your partner in mind. When you know how you will use the space, it will be easier for you to select the right furniture, window treatments and lighting.
