Lincoln Square is a very walkable neighborhood. You have three CTA Brown Line stops servicing the eastern and western parts of this area (Rockwell, Western and Montrose). You also have access to the Metra train at Ravenswood and Lawrence on the Union Pacific North Line which goes into the city at Ogilvy downtown. Take your pick. The main commercial corridor on Lincoln Ave. between Montrose and Lawrence has plenty to do including a gym, bars, restaurants, banks, a park and a movie theater. North of Lawrence ave., you're farther from the trains and nightlife, but closer to the amazing parks in the area. Winnemac park on the east and Legion Park on the west.
Lincoln Square is a walker's paradise! WALKSCORE GIVES IT A 98! Tons of nearby amenities- the (preferred) brown line provides easy transportation to the loop, fantastic restaurants are plentiful, walking through Welles Park is a pleasure, listening to summer concerts in the gazebo is fantastic, and the nearby Sulzer Regional Library is a treasure. In what sense do you mean, walking around to other popular neighborhoods? You can on a good day, but its pretty far north for a quick walk to Lincoln Park.
Lincoln Square is great to walk around, such a cute part, and you've got Andersonville within walking distance too. There's a brown line train right in the heart of it too.
I lived very close to the Metra in Ravenswood, which was my favorite spot. You could catch a ten minute metra train downtown on a schedule (the el from there will say its 30 min, but the el can be an hour to 45 from there depending on when you grab it), and you were within walking distance to the hip shops and bars in Lincoln Square and great restaurants and shops in Andersonville. Ravenswood is where it's at.
