Are there any health concerns living near the zinc smelter in Lutana?

Yes. There's high levels of cadmium, lead, copper and zinc in the industrial effluent from the smelter. All are heavy metals and are toxic in large doses. The toxins can be inhaled by us which can create some serious health concerns and are carcinogenic. These toxins (like Cadmium) have a half life of 30 years which means they are persistent in the soil and will be taken up by plants particularly leafy greens. High levels of these heavy metals have been found in the Derwent river.
