Yes Alton House was a ten room two storey stone house built by Dr David Wark in 1848 combining outhouses fowl sheds servants quarters horse stables and fruit trees and paddocks about 41 acres in all. The house had two balconies one on the east side and one on the West side where the owner could look out to Adelaide in the west towards the Gulf St Vincent. My great grandfathers Uncle Daniel Chappell owned this house between 1862 and 1876 when he died and was buried in the St Georges Cemetery down the St Bernard's Road. The house had a road entrance driving to the front of the house. I am Robert Chappell live near where this house was and would welcome anybody who has any more information on this house. It was demolished about 1936 and replaced by a single storey house called Rosemear which in turn was demolished in 1966 to make way for the James Evans Court units presently on the site. my email address is [email protected]
