"Amazing Malvern"

I have been living in Malvern for 1 year and love the "homely" feel the town has. It's very close to the City with Trams and Trains running direct. If you like shopping Glenferrie Road has an amazing amount of boutiques, as well as grocery stores, hairdressers and everything you can think of. It's a mini Chapel Street in feel, as you also have all the amazing antique and bridal stores on High Street.

You are super close to the beach in St Kilda (15 minutes drive) or if you prefer Sandringham or Brighton you are on the right side of town. 100's of Restaurants in the area, and you are close to Armadale, Toorak and Hawthorn. 15 minutes away by car you can get to Chadstone the Fashion Capital, for hours of shopping! Lots of Parks and Playgrounds are around, so take your pick out of Armadale gardens, Caufield Parks or Melbourne Botanical Gardens are all 15 minutes away maximum.

This area is a wealthy, well to do suburb with plenty of young families and older couples. I would recommend Malvern for Couples as it has lots of things to do eating out wise, as well as South Yarra and Prahran being close by via Taxi for a big night out.

Great for

  • Glenferrie Road... LOTS of shopping
  • 100's of Restaurants! Take your pick
  • Excellent Transport!

Not great for

  • Bad Traffic on High Street and Glenferrie Road, watch out for the 100's of BMW X5's who take over the road!
  • Snobby, yet not too much!

"Elegance & Sophistication"

Malvern oozes elegance and sophistication. Known for its classic Victorian and Edwardian architecture and prestigious locale, the tree-lined streets of Malvern offer a perfect blend of serenity and convenience. Walking the tranquil streets, you would never know that the city was a stone’s throw away. Malvern’s prestigious schools, boutique shopping on Glenferrie Road, beautiful parks like Malvern Gardens, stand the suburb as a timeless and desirable location.

"Elegant and sophisticated."

Celebrated for its charming mix of luxurious period homes, modish residential projects, life’s necessities, decadent restaurants and designer stores, perfectly balanced by peaceful natural surrounds and quiet streetscapes. Fine heritage buildings now repurposed into retail and dining hubs gives Glenferrie Road shopping strip a tastefully eclectic appeal. Malvern is a homewares haven and a food purveyor heaven with many dining and retail businesses woven into its rich landscape and waiting to be uncovered. Home to many serene outdoor spaces, enjoy a stroll through the beautiful Malvern Gardens prized with an ornamental pond and grotto. Illustrious custom sites such as Stonington Mansion, Malvern Town Hall, Malvern Tram Depot and many more are a timeless testament to Malvern’s notable popularity dating back to its establishment in the early 1800’s. So much history frames this faultless suburb and Malvern locals have been impeccable in preserving its period splendor whilst infusing it with modern day style.

"Nice suburb, but relatively so-so"

Malvern to me, isn't a first choice suburb. People just sort of happen to end up there if they couldn't find what they were looking for elsewhere. Yes, it may be a prestigious suburb and a nice enough place to live in its own right. However, the surrounding suburbs are much better, depending on what you're looking for.

If you're looking for a large family home in a wealthy area with social cachet, buy in Toorak rather than the streets off Glenferrie above Malvern Rd (which cost just as much per sq m). If you want a lovely family home on a bigger block in a quiet tree-lined street near major transport links and large facilities (especially Chadstone) Malvern East is actually better as Malvern proper is denser and doesn't host many of its own attractions. If you're a young professional and want a suburb with plentiful shops and cafes, buy in Armadale. If you want accessibility to Glenferrie Rd, the Hawthorn side is also much nicer. Also, the northern end by Tooronga Rd is quite industrial and always very congested.

There is no "focal point", vibe or community in Malvern proper. Malvern has this feel that it's just all houses where each household live their separate lives. Toorak has Toorak Village, Hawthorn has Glenferrie Rd and Malvern East has Central Park, Ardrie Park & Chadstone. And the landmarks of "Malvern" (Malvern Central & the town hall) are actually within (or just opposite) Armadale - thus much more accessible if you live in Armadale.

Thanks for your input aa6. Here are just my 2 cents.
1. Streets off Glenferrie road above Malvern road are nowhere near as expensive as their counterparts in Toorak. Here is one example for you:

https://www.realestate.com.au/sold/property-house-vic-toorak-126344574
2. Malvern East, as lovely as it is, is a sprawling suburb with a large variety of dwellings. While Gascoigne Estate off Bourke road is very nice, but have you checked out the housing quality near Chadstone shopping centre? Many 1960's cream brick houses are a long way from what you can call a nice home.
3. Hawthorn side of the Glenferrie road has a large university student population. Maybe nicer than Malvern's in your opinion, but not in others'.
4. FYI Toorongard road is located in Glen Iris. :-)
5. Have you checked out Malvern Public Gardens? In my opinion, it is worthy of a focal point.
6. Last but not least, I had the budget to live anywhere in Melbourne bar Toorak, and I chose to buy in Malvern because its beautiful streetscape and plentiful amenities. So I guess it was certainly a conscious decision for me. :-)

Hi Laura, Going through this forum, saw that you've been staying in Malvern for a long time. My sister and her family (husband and kid) are looking for a nice house in Malvern area starting 1st week April. Would you know anyone who is willing to rent their apartment to an Indian family?

"Malvern- A great suburb for a small family"

Malvern is a great suburb out of the CBD that allows suburban living but also the possibility of being close to the city. With slightly larger block sizes than further inner city suburbs like Windsor or Armadale, Malvern is spacious and has tree lined streets in abundance. It is well positioned for a young family with primary schools on offer as well as lots of park and recreation space at Central park.

Great for

  • Great family area
  • Good facilities on offer
  • 100's of Restaurants! Take your pick
  • Glenferrie Road... LOTS of shopping

Not great for

  • Expensive
  • A little bit snobby.
