Just found this excellent and long review of NYC restaurant critics. It makes a nice point that not everyone who can eat and write knows how to write about the experience of eating. A nice mix of food and literary styling:

What an interesting article - thanks, Uraniumfish! I agree that it's a rare food writer who can really capture the essence of eating in all its sensual glory. Except, of course, the French...

I think food writing may be a bit like writing about music - more difficult than people realize. Some mediums are just hard to translate into words.
Side note - does anyone else miss Gourmet magazine?
