If you spend too long looking at crime maps you may never leave your house!
Maxwell Park is a beautiful neighborhood with many lovely craftsman homes, curved streets, matures trees, rolling hills and some gorgeous views. The demographics appear to be a melting pot, and there is a lively neighborhood online community and a strong neighborhood feel. There is no shopping center, but the Laurel and Dimond are close by, and the Safeways is a few minutes drive . Mills College has great grounds for walking and there is a park and co-op preschool and I believe a new charter school in the area since the elementary closed. I'd suggest drive around and talk to residents. I enjoyed living there and commuted to SF by bus for years, it was shorter than when I lived in SF.
Apologies in advance if you I already answered this question and you were looking for a different perspective. Here is the deal in terms of safety. In the last six months, within one mile of the heart of Maxwell Park, the following crimes have taken place:
4 murders
197 Assaults
289 Burglaries and Robberies
Now most of these are outside of the edges of the neighborhood but this is still pretty bad. (Crime in Oakland is actually sorry right now. I don't think it takes Sherlock Holmes to figure out that it may have something to do with the 80 officers that were laid off from Oakland PD last year.)
