Reviews of Melbourne St, North Adelaide

"Quiet, yet busy."

Quiet, yet busy. Plenty of fantastic eateries, shops and a couple of gyms to keep the mind and body active.

The Old Lion is a staple and offers great meals. A couple of great developments are popping up around the street. Can't go wrong on Melbourne Street.

"Home of the LION hotel"

I Love Melbourne Street. I used to work on the street and I miss it. CIBO coffee and when I was there they had a nice Ice Cream store there, Golden North? Anyway the LION hotel is brilliant. Back in the day I could get a Parmy with a glass of coke and $3 for pokies all for $9. I used to pocket the $3 so it was a 6 dollar lunch. loved it. Nice building and there is a IGA and other specialty stores

Great for

  • LION hotel
  • Great coffee
  • Very clean

Not great for

  • Lack of parking at times

"Location, location, location with lots of atmosphere"

Melbourne Street is a prime location in the heart of North Adelaide. It is one of the leading café strips, offering a number of coffee bars, restaurants and pubs plus a number of retail and grocery stores. Everything you need is at your fingertips.

Most of the accommodation on Melbourne Street itself is in apartment blocks, and all are starting to get a few years of age. This means that prices are quite reasonable, and so the apartments are generally quite popular with students and international visitors on a temporary basis.

Melbourne Street can be very busy with traffic - often bumper to bumper in both the morning and peak hour.

The street is also very popular for socialising, so can be quite noisy at night with live music blaring from the pubs and people then heading home late at night.

"Relaxed living and a cosmopolitan lifestyle for professional couples"

The Melbourne Street area of North Adelaide is the perfect location for professional couples, working in the city or surrounds. Situated just over the River Torrens, immediately north of the city, it is a great suburb for a top quality lifestyle.

Melbourne Street is the perfect spot for catching up with friends over a casual dinner or a few drinks, with a couple of great pubs in the surrounding streets, cafes and restaurants, not to mention the coffee shops with Cibo, Ciccolate and The Store all vying to offer the best coffee in SA. The Lion Hotel, situated in pride of place on Melbourne Street’s main intersection, is an Adelaide institution with its fine-dining restaurant, fantastic cocktail menu and bar.

Tempted to eat in? There are a couple of small grocery stores, as well as a much larger supermarket up on O'Connell Street which is a 10-15 min walk or 2 min drive away.

Travelling in to the city from here is easy - just catch the 271 or 273 bus which arrives on Melbourne Street every 7 minutes or so, or you can walk there in 25 minutes. Parking can be a little bit scarce in the area, but permit parking can be arranged and visitors can usually find a spot in one of the surrounding streets.

Need to unwind after a long day? The Uni Loop (3 sports fields with a 2.2 km jogging track) is only a street away - perfect for jogging, walking the dog or accessing the walking and cycling trails around the River Torrens. Next Generation, SA’s most glamorous and well-equipped gym, is just down the road. Otherwise head up to O’Connell Street to the Piccadilly Cinemas if you really need a night off.

North Adelaide is the perfect spot, and with rental prices still quite reasonable (particularly in light of the exorbitant house prices in the area), it offers everything required for a super-convenient lifestyle with all the benefits of being right next door to the CBD.
