"A great community - ideal for families!"

Monbulk is a great place to live. The community is very close knit and there are great sporting facilities, clubs to join, lovely schools and a wonderful shopping village. There are great places to eat or have a coffee and it is fairly open with lots of sun. There is a public bus route and really good primary and secondary schools.
Some people may think that it is too far away from Belgrave or Lilydale however, I think it is great to be in a quieter location without the traffic but with easy access to the larger townships around the area. You get more value for your money and a really caring community vibe.

Looking for a home in Monbulk?

"Love It"

Moved to Monbulk 2 years ago as newlyweds and we have a gorgeous character cottage on a large, lushly forested block. Beautiful greenery (trees, ferns, flowers everywhere), wildlife ( we see more kookaburras and owls than magpies) just on our own property and this continues throughout town.

We have a Safeway and an ALDI both of which are well stocked and never busy, as well as an amazing restaurant Bernados for breakfasts, lunch and dinner (best breakfast around!). Fantastic Chinese and Thai for dine in or takeaway, as well as charcoal chicken, fish and chips, pizza etc. A local Produce Market is held second Saturday of each month which we hold a stall in with handmade soaps and beauty products.

Still close enough to everything we need (Knox, etc) but feel we live in lofty paradise in the hills. We will never leave!

"Hide away in the hills. Good for families if one parent stays home to drive the kids."

I moved to Monbulk in the late 1980's before moving overseas for a number of years around the mid 2000's. Monbulk is quiet, the kind of town you live in to escape and enjoy life with your family.

During the 1990's Monbulk College didn't have the best reputation so I went to Emerald Secondary College. I was associated with Monbulk Scouts as well as a youth group at St. George's Anglican Church. There's also sports clubs in Monbulk (although the youth group kept me busy).

Monbulk might not have many eat out options, by car it is near other hills towns. I can't imagine growing up in Monbulk without my Mum being my stay-at-home Mum \ taxi... lol. If you don't drive then Monbulk isn't the place for you.

That said, I had a great time living in my family home there. I did spend much of my time in other places though, like Emerald, Belgrave, Knox City and surrounding areas.

Great for

  • Good sized land for children to play
  • Quiet residential streets
  • Half an hour from Knox
  • Character homes
  • Laid-back atmosphere
  • Tree-lined streets

Not great for

  • Must drive a car
  • Needs a good restaurant
  • Not on train line
  • Shopping strip fairly average

"True hills living"

Six years ago, I considered buying in Monbulk but decided it was too far out. After all, the train line ends in Belgrave! Three years ago, discovered the perfect block of land in Monbulk and, after having lived in Belgrave for a few years, Monbulk didn't seem THAT much further.

Most people here are really friendly, with the odd exception. You can always get a carpark right out the front of Safeway (except the day before Christmas) and there's a few choices for take-away (two pizza shops, Chinese and charcoal chicken) and four bakeries.

It's not far to Knox, Eastland or Fountain Gate (about 20 to 30 min).

Monbulk wouldn't be a good choice of suburb if you don't have a car ... the buses are infrequent and don't run very late in the evening.

"Great for Families that want some space around them, and great schools."

Lived in Monbulk 4 years, despite it's reputation preceeding it, I have found it to be friendly, a real community spirit, the kids can walk up to the Main street and I am not worrying about their safety, it's a small township with an average selection of shops, and I do miss being able to buy great takeaway...thank God they have an amazing pizza shop in Kallista, and Olinda has some great restaurants less than 10 mins away, we have a Safeway and it's a short 20 min drive to Wantirna or Fountaingate. In our part of Monbulk it is very quiet with no real traffic. There is a variety of sports clubs and after school activities for the kids, and my kids are looking forward to the completion of the new community hub.

"safe area out of the hustle and bustle"

Very quiet and friendly. Well out of the city with safe streets it’s a great place for young families. Let the kids run the streets and be kids without the fear they’ll be struck as the roads aren’t busy.
Beautiful country, although it can get very cold, there is everything you could need close by. Sports grounds, supermarkets and a significant shopping centre makes for a nice place to be. My brother needed to buy a suit while here for a wedding and so it was good he didn’t have to go far.
With plenty of well established trees and an abundance of wildlife it is the best of both worlds, close to central Melbourne but a quiet tranquil and safe place to raise a family. There is also plenty of produce around the area - so if you want it you'll be able to get it fresh.
Good schools and parks = great family location
