Now Trending: Shop Front Homes in Melbourne

Drawn in by the Victorian charm and architectural glory of a bygone era, Melbournians are flocking in droves to inspect sensationally appointed and modern conversions of shop front homes.

According to Real Estate Institute of Victoria CEO, Enzo Raymond, shop front homes are a magnetic attraction for home buyers in the Melbourne property market. “Across the inner areas of Melbourne, these shops are increasingly being converted to residences and are passed on to future generations to live in and enjoy. They are popular for their historical value and often long-term connection to the local community,” he said.

A gleaming example of a beautifully converted traditional shop front home circa 1883 is currently up for grabs from Compton Green, the largest independent agency in the inner west of Melbourne. Located at 142 Stephen Street Yarraville the home has a rich history having operated as a newsagency between 1883 and 1898, once belonging to Yarraville pioneer, James Palmer.

The front room, formerly known as the “newsagency” in the 1800s, is now a generously proportioned front living area with a cool rustic ambience thanks to the extensive period timber panelling and soaring ceilings.

The owner of 142 Stephen Street, Yarraville, Annie Healy reflects that “the shop front is one of my favourite parts of the home. The sheer size is fantastic and it is a room for absolutely every occasion.”

Beyond the shop front living area is a hallway of warm baltic timber floors running down the spine of the house leading to three charming bedrooms, each of which feature a character-rich fireplace and are conveniently positioned around the central bathroom.

Towards the rear of the home are formal dining areas and a functional kitchen/casual meals area overlooking a lush garden and wrap around deck, perfect for outdoor entertaining.

142 Stephen Street, Yarraville is going under the hammer on the first of August at 12pm. Compton Green are expecting a sale price of $850,000 plus.
