"Convenient, good value and growing reputation"

We are a professional couple who previously rented in the inner-city before purchasing and moving into a house over the train line in Northgate. We chose Northgate because it represented good value in what seemed an extremely convenient location on the fringe of some very good suburbs (Ascot, Clayfield, Hendra, Nundah, etc.). For those who work in the CBD, Northgate train station is perfect as it is such a short walk for residents and the station is so well-serviced with multiples lines passing through - between 6am and 9am, one rarely has to wait longer than 2-3 minutes for an in-bound train and a train is often arriving as another is departing. Additionally, all express services stop at Northgate, which is great if you've been slow to get moving in the morn. On weekends, the cafes and restaurants in Ascot are always a nice option and only a 5 or so minute drive away. One can also enjoy a morning stroll to Rhino Espresso on Northgate Road in Northgate Heights for a leisurely coffee (Piazza D'oro) and light meal (perhaps after purchasing a few newspapers at the next door newsagency). Groceries and other shopping can be done in Ascot, Clayfield (3-5 mins), Chermside (5-8 mins), DFO (3-6 mins), Toombul (2-4 mins) or Nundah Village (1-3 mins). There are also some convenience stores in Northgate itself as well as some quick eats along Toombul Road in Virginia (1-2 mins) if one is desperate. There's also some petrol stations along Toombul Road and some handy furniture and homewares stores along Sandgate Road in Virginia (2-3 mins). Access to the motorways is super-fast and a real advantage - a day trip or weekend away up or down the coast, or north to Shorncliffe, Sandgate, Redcliffe or Bribie Island, or east to Bulimba, Manly, Wellington Point or Cleveland, becomes quick and easy. Taxis to the Airport also won't come any cheaper than from Northgate. The area of Northgate in which we live is safe with a strong and active Neighbourhood Watch presence. It is generally neighbourly and quiet - Toombul Road does get some traffic but the noise is minimal during the important hours and the trains do not disturb us. We don't see or hear any planes - this is not an issue at all. The light industrial works that others have mentioned are barely noticeable and in fact are pocketed away adjacent to the train line on the non-residential side of Toombul Road (UPDATE: the Esco foundry has recently permanently shut down following sustained Council and community pressure, virtually eliminating this as an issue). The local demographic appears be a mix of the old and the young, the middle, lower-middle and upper-working class, with an increasing number of upwardly mobile types and prosperous young families buying into the suburb, with its charming post-war homes, cottages and Queenslanders. All in all, Northgate is an excellent base and a suburb in which anyone could feel comfortable and 'at home'.

Great for

  • One of the best commuter train stations in Brisbane. Super-fast access to motorways and Airport.
  • Multiple shopping options in close proximity. Safe with strong and active Neighbourhood Watch presence.
  • On fringe of prestige suburbs. Private schools nearby and Brisbane Grammar playing fields in Northgate.

This is FANTASTIC!
Thank you for taking the time to write up your suburb, it makes things easier for us to know where to invest.
Is Northgate ACTUALLY in the flight path???? 😳
Anything else you want to add (not that you haven't covered most of it anyway! 👌🏼) would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again!

Hi Jules, Northgate is not in the old or new flight paths. https://flightpathtool.bne.com.au/bac/map

Hello, I am looking to buy a house at the end of the Allworth Street. Would have issues with noise coming from the industrial part? Allworth St seem to have some factories there. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Beware!! The Flight Path Tool does not include Turboprops which service FIFO mine sites and regional towns of Queensland. It only includes jets. Northgate is affected by turboprops departing not arriving from the New Runway and traverse over Northgate railway station then roughly due west. The Flight Tool is for a rough indication of affected suburbs only and not to be relied on. The best way is to visit the area between 6 to 7am during the week and you will get a true indication of aircraft noise

Looking for a home in Northgate?

20th July 2022

"Love Northgate"

As a family of 5 we absolutely love Northgate. We live on a large block and are surrounded by other homes on large blocks. It feels to peaceful and green. The community is so friendly. The city isn’t far and chermside is only a few minutes down the road. We were looking at buying closer in but couldn’t find a street as gorgeous as what we found in Northgate.

"Very Attractive Suburb"

Great accessibility for train, bus, airport, shops, schools - everything is convenient. The suburb presents beautifully. There are a lot of units on the western side though. The eastern side of the railway looks good value for money. You can easily imagine how trendy Northgate will become a decade from now.

"Great community, close to everything"

It is a very quiet suburb, away from all the chaos of the city but close to the shops, schools, parks and public transport.
If you live near the train station, you are able to take advantage of Northgate being the gateway to the northern suburbs with two different train lines running through. This means trains every 15 minutes instead of every half hour!
Walking distance to Nundah and Toombul shopping centres. Northgate is also just down the road from Chermside, the largest shopping centre in Queensland the second largest in Australia. If for whatever reason you are missing some shops, you can probably get it online.
If you ever want to leave the best suburb in Brisbane to go somewhere else, it also happens to be right next to the Airport.

What more could you want?

Great for

  • Close to big shopping centres
  • Best public transport
  • Good train staion
  • Close to airport and city
  • Close to the air port
  • Easy name to remember
  • Family friendly neighbourhood

Not great for

  • Not close to a beach

"Northgate - Elegant, Friendly, Old Style Classic Homes, and Easy Access to Everything"

Northgate is a beautiful suburb, quiet, pretty and peaceful tree-lined streets, huge classic Queenslanders on vast blocks. More beautiful and friendly than Ascot - but at two thirds or less of the price. The neighbourhood atmosphere reminds me of the 1950s. In Northgate, we do not have easements and sell off our backyards. We keep our huge yards, enjoy the birdlife and let the kids and pets enjoy the space. We have a neighbourhood hub of shops which is great (great coffee, food and service at Rhino) and within seconds you are at Nundah which is now a very busy yet accessible commercial shopping hub with lots of excellent eating options. Access to public transport is fantastic with train and bus. Several lovely, safe, well-kept parks with good amenities. The strong Northgate community atmosphere with traditions and customs that come from our senior, older residents who have been here for many decades is great for new families who want to be warmly welcomed into the area. Very well placed for easy access by road to North or South Coast and also easy fast access now to Airport Link - 6 minutes to Stafford now from Northgate! 10 - 15 minutes to the airport. I hear no flight noise at all and I feel much safer here than when we lived in Ascot. There is light industrial over the train line - doesn't bother us at all - reminds me of Kensington in Mebourne - all round fantastic areas to live. Couldn't be happier here in Northgate - we love it.

Great for

  • Beautiful old houses on big blocks
  • Close to Centro Toombul and Westfield Chermside
  • Beautiful tree-lined streets
  • Good train staion
  • Close to airport and city
  • Close to the air port
  • Easy name to remember
  • Family friendly neighbourhood

"Great place"

Very friendly area and great for families with children and retirees. Aircraft noise is completely overstated as there is only one flight path over part of Northgate (incidentally over my house) that causes absolutely minimal noise as the aircraft are departing Brisbane at altitude. The M7 is right nearby and very useful for anyone working in and around the city. Northgate is highly recommended!

"Could be worse"

Iv lived in Northgate most of my young life and all my teenage life. Were i am is the industrious area there is alot of noise. Both metal fabrication and hoons.

My Neighbor's are not vary Neighbourly all down my street. Northgate is home to Queenslands most un user friendly road and parking is a trouble due to trucks.

There are a fair few of groups of troublesome teenagers that iv noticed developing in the last 2 years. There is alot of new houses being built in the area as well so the older houses are loosing value.

Over all its good enough to live in but its turning in to its surrounding areas like Zillmere

Great for

  • Good train staion
  • Close to the air port
  • Easy name to remember

Not great for

  • Many hoons in the area
  • Many steel fabrication factories in the area
  • Is under a main flight path for the air port

"Brisbane's best kept secret !"

My wife loves Northgate because of it's wide tree lined streets, friendly atmosphere, parks, 'cute' little shops, and the nice big old homes. She also loves it because it is very quiet with little traffic in most parts and it is so close to everything such as shops, schools, shops, services, and shops (by train or car)
I like it because of all of the above (yes dear) plus it has so many indicators for strong long term growth such as close proximity to multiple employment hubs, it's very much undervalued, good infrastructure, has close proximity to multiple transport corridors (2 train stations within 2kms, aiports, Gateway Motorway, Port of Brisbane etc), good population growth, a middle ring suburb, close to various lifestyle amenities, and is only 10km to the CBD. A big plus is that I travel interstate a fair bit with work and I can get to the airport in under 15 minutes.
The 18 yr old son likes Northgate because there is a gym less than 5 minutes drive away, he can catch the train into the city or the Valley for a few bucks (return) and gets there in less than 20 minutes, He can walk to work (Nundah), Westfield Chermside is only 10 or so minutes drive away, good pubs at Nundah, the north and south coasts are both only about one hours drive away and he doesn't have to pay rent (long story)
An amazing family suburb.

"Northgate - a fantastic suburb and Brisbane's best kept secret!"

We love this place. Quiet. Leafy. Quaint. Great value properties. Lots of Qlders being renovated and the suburb has a lovely "old school" feel to it. Excellent public transport including a very central train station (about 16 mins to Central station)
Wonderful community spirit. Everyone is very friendly.
Less than 10kms to the city and it will be an even quicker drive to the CBD when Airport Link at Toombul is eventually finished.
Handy to shopping at Centro Toombul, Nundah, and Westfield Chermside.
Extremely easy access to the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast via the Gateway Motorway (Northgate sits about halfway)
No real nightlife to speak of but a quick train trip into the Valley or CBD for those looking for nightlife. We think that Northgate is what living in the 'burbs should be. Stress free but close to everything. Anything not in Northgate is not far away.
A couple of great little parks.
Circa Nundah (when it is finished) will be only 5 minutes away. If it is anything like James St and The Barracks, we feel that Circa Nundah may do big things for Nundah/Northgate.
Has been tipped as one of Qlds real estate "hotspots". We hope that doesn't happen. We like our suburb just the way it is.
Northgate is Brisbane's best kept secret.

"Good and getting better"

Great quiet, leafy suburb with lots of beautiful properties. Northgate train station is one of the best in Brisbane for frequency of services. Suburb will benefit from urban renewal in Nundah in coming years but is far enough away to avoid the congestin and traffic that invariably come with development.

"Northgate - Close to all Brisbane amentities"

Northgate is a suburb on the northern side of Brisbane. This suburb is a beautiful quiet area with large tree lined streets. Northgate is great for both the visitor and the local resident. You can visit the Golden Circle factory nearby and being so close to Brisbane CBD there are plenty of opportunities for entertainment of all kinds. Northgate has shops of all descriptions and there are work opportunities as well as schools and universities with medical centers, garages etc all in the area. There are plenty of accommodation options including motels and hotels. Northgate is close Home prices are getting quite expensive here as the area gains popularity.
