Best Restaurants in Port Douglas

After spending so much time in the wonderful town of Port Douglas in Sunny north Queensland, I often have people ask me what are the best places to eat. As there are so many, I thought I'd create a list to share!

1. Sassi Cucina
Shp38/ 9 Grant St
PH: (07) 4099 6744

This is one of the best restaurants in Port Douglas (It moved from the main street to Bale, and now to Grant Street). More elegant dining that most in Port Douglas, you can't go past their Chilli Mud Crab. A true delight.

2. Nautilus Restaurant
17 Murphy St, Port Douglas
PH: (07) 40995330
http://www.nautilus-restaurant.com.au/
Open 6pm till late

A very special dining experience, this has to be the best in Port Douglas by far. Very romantic setting high up in the rainforest. A delight when it rains as well, with the heavy canopy protectors drawn. An amazing experience.

3. On The Inlet
3 Inlet St, Port Douglas
PH: (07) 4099 5255

Open 12pm till late

Great casual fare, for both dinner and lunch. You get a great view of all the boats leaving and coming into the marina after a day out at the reef.

4. 2 Fish Seafood Restaurant
18 Wharf St, Port Douglas
PH: (07) 4099 6350‎

Some of the best fish in town, great for family dining as well. I recommend the Barra!

5. Watergate Port Douglas
Shop 5
31 Macrossan St, Port Douglas
PH: (07) 4099 5544

Not bad food, but a great bar. Right in the middle of town, if you are looking for a place to have some cruisy cocktails with friends, look no further. Nice atmosphere.

Unfortunately Sassi is no longer at Bale - this was a favourite for fine dining in Port Douglas.

There is, however, fortunately, still Salsa Bar and Grill, a favourite of locals and visitors. Located in a Queenslander style building on Wharf Street, with fans swirling overhead, and deck, this is a reliable choice. The linguine with yabbies is a must-have on the lunch menu, as too the curried chicken spring rolls.

Sassi's is not longer there?!?! NOOOOOOOOOO! I adore their Chilli Mud Crab. Do you know if they have moved at all PortDouglasQld? I was really annoyed when they moved out of their corner spot in the town, because I thought the atmosphere was much better there than at Bale.

I do like Salsa Bar and Grill as well, I'll have to add to the list as well.

Sit under a shady frangipani tree or enjoy the autumn sun on the terrace at Cafe Fresq, corner of Macrossan and Grant Streets, and enjoy great coffee, or a leisurely brekky or lunch. Fresh, tasty, Fresq is best!

With arguably the best views in Port Douglas, over the inlet and towards rainforest covered hills, the Port Douglas and Districts Combined Services Club, "The Tin Shed", has had a great renovation, and the deck is the place to kick back and enjoy a cold drink and value-for-money meals. (Love the curries.) Friday night is Members' Night. Sign in and you might be the one to go home with the meat tray!

Sassi's has just reopened as Sassi's Cantina, Grant Street, Port Douglas. Serving "spuntini" (tapas type dishes), pizza, and some of the fab Sassi classics, including the unusual but delicious basil icecream, this is a welcome (re-)addition to the Port Douglas dining choices.

Hi PortDouglasQLD,

That is FANTASTIC news!! Sassi's was always my favourite restaurant, and I was so upset when it moved to Bale and then closed down completely. Please tell me the classic chilli mud crab is back?

Sure is! Also the parmesan "icecream", grilled wild barramundi, Sassi oysters ... you'll have to plan a trip soon (or buy a property from Cote Nord Property Port Douglas)!

I'm coming back to Port Douglas in October and want to know what's the latest on the restaurant scene in Port Douglas? Any recommendations or new restaurants in the past 12 months?
