Hi Paul, I'm also from Ballarat and I moved to Cairns about 6 years ago. I think it depends on what lifestyle you're chasing as to whether Brisbane or Port Douglas would be best for you. Port Douglas reminds me of a tropical Daylesford; the feeling of community and it's size is quite similar, and there is one main street. The weather is great and the beach is close from everywhere. Have you thought about living in Cairns? Cairns would be 'middle ground' and there are beach suburbs to the North of Cairns (Trinity Beach, Palm Cove etc). It's also only approx. 30 minute drive to Port so you would have access to larger City facilities but be close to the beaches too.
