Is Port Richmond a safe place to live and raise a family?

I am looking into purchasing a home on a private street (cul de sac)in port richmond (behind the AutoZone/Pathmark). Can anyone living in SI or in the area offer advice if this is a safe area to raise a family? Is the area getting better in terms of crime/schools? Would you move here or stay here?
