Firstly, Port Washington is actually a hamlet, and not a Town or Village or City. There is a Port Washington Police, Fire, Water District, Water Pollution Control District, school district, etc., but no Port Washington government. Five villages have their own elected Trustees and Mayors, and there are also unincorporated areas that are governed by the Town of North Hempstead. Since PW is a peninsula, it is surrounded by water on 3 sides. Therefore, there is little unwanted drive - thru traffic, and there is more of a quaint, community feeling. There are also 2 movie theaters with over a dozen screens, a theater at the Landmark, a couple of parks, pools, and beeches, plus other features. It is a great walking around area.
