How long a commute is it from Somers to Greenwich, CT? Is public transport an option?

Well, if you are driving it takes roughly 38 minutes by way of I-684. Public transport is not really an option. It can be done by train, but it is a terribly long-winded roundabout way with multiple stops and transfers and would take you a grand total of two hours and twenty-five minutes. That might be kind of rough on a daily basis.
Yes, most of our commuting driving and train routes run North and South. If you would like to take back roads start at Rt 35 and head East to Rt 22 and follow South through Katonah, Bedford and Armonk into Greenwich! Good to know in case of accidents on 684.
I agree with Ajanette re public transit. Since there is no direct train service, first you have to get to Metro North in a neighboring town. Then you'd have to take the train to White Plains, transfer to the local, get off at Fordham and transfer again to the New Haven line. To be honest, it's good to know of the option during the winter when the roads are bad, but on a daily basis it would be challenging.
