Our family have lived in Port/South Hedland for 12 years. We love the fishing, camping and friends we have made. There are several school choices in Primary School and 1 private School. At present, there is only 1 high school with alot of parents sending their families to Boarding school in year 8. We have our children in high school here and havent had a problem. Our children have grown into mature teenagers. We live and work locally with neither of us being employed in the mining industry. We love the town and accept no matter where you live there are going to be issues. If you lock your house and your car (well) dont leave money or valuable lying around, then you will be fine. Our neighbourhood sticks together when it comes to crime and work with the police. We moved out of Hedland, but came back as there are plenty of employment opportunities for our family here. We catch up with our friends regularly and have time to enjoy life. There are so many new things happening in this town, you need to think positive. All towns have issues and if you ask the local police, they will tell you they have more problems with Fly in Fly out workers than the locals! I have no regrets, its a place where you really can get ahead financially and keep your family close.
